Take Me to Your Leader: My Library Experience students (2 QP's, one Avid) were huddled over it, one boy (QP) looked at it/read it the whole period. At the end of the period I asked him why his books weren't shelved and he said it was the book's fault. All I had to do to get them hooked was show them the picture of the guy with hoop piercings all over his face. I showed it to a teacher (who had been previously browsing through the Guinness Book of Records) and he acted like I was a nutcase. And my student was upset that it wasn't processed nor catalogued yet.

I put this book out with a bunch of other QP noms but none of my 7th/8th gr. girls (all very selective and/or reluctant readers) gravitated to it right away. One said that the cover was "ugly" (it must be the continuing aversion to lime green by NYC kids). Then I opened the book to a spread on animals and insects mating and suddenly the girls were all over it - reading the book aloud to each other. Some of the comments, "This book is CRAZY!", "I want to take this book home!", "hot!", " funny but weird!". There was about 4 girls bent over the book for 15 minutes doing a running commentary on the spreads. I wish I had had a recorder cuz they were hilarious. I am going to it try at a school with older students and boys!

I occasionally get help from another librarian, Chris, whose reluctant readers are mostly 14-17 year old boys who are goths, metal heads, skaters and gamers. Seeing as these are fairly different RRs then at my library I decided to get feedback from them on some of the nominations. Chris just sent me their initial reaction to the box I sent and I thought i'd share what he wrote.
Hi Anne,
So the rock and roll poster books caused a riot, as did the Dark metal manga. I actually got cut during the process, since so many teens were grabbing for those.
Could you request more from the publishers? Pretty pretty pretty please?
